Complement Component 3 (C3)

Complement Component 3 (C3) is the central and most abundant protein of the complement system, serving as a critical nexus for all three complement activation pathways (classical, lectin, and alternative)[@merle2015]. In the brain, C3 is produced not only by hepatocytes in the liver but also locally by astrocytes and microglia, making it a key mediator of neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases[@mcgeer2015]. As an emerging biomarker, C3 and its cleavage fragments (C3a, C3b, C3c, C3d) provide valuable insights into complement activation status in Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease (PD), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD)[@zhou2020].
