Overview
CRH neurons (corticotropin-releasing hormone neurons) are specialized neuroendocrine cells primarily located in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, though CRH-expressing neurons are also distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. These neurons serve as the central orchestrators of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a critical neuroendocrine system regulating stress responses and maintaining systemic homeostasis. CRH neurons synthesize and release corticotropin-releasing hormone (also called corticotropin-releasing factor, CRF), a 41-amino acid peptide neurotransmitter that initiates the stress response cascade.
