The enteric nervous system (ENS) is often called the "second brain" due to its complex network of neurons embedded in the gastrointestinal tract wall. With approximately 100 million neurons—roughly the same number as in the spinal cord—the ENS controls gut motility, secretion, blood flow, and immune functions autonomously, though it communicates extensively with the central nervous system (CNS) via the vagus nerve and sympathetic pathways.
