Melanin-Concentrating Hormone (MCH) neurons are a population of peptidergic neurons located primarily in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) that play critical roles in regulating sleep-wake cycles, feeding behavior, energy homeostasis, and reward processing. These neurons produce the neuropeptide melanin-concentrating hormone, which exerts its effects through two G protein-coupled receptors, MCHR1 and MCHR2. MCH Neuropeptide
The MCH precursor peptide is encoded by the PMCH gene (Pro-Melanin Concentrating Hormone) located on chromosome 12p12.1. MCH is a 19-amino acid cyclic neuropeptide originally characterized in fish where it controls skin pigmentation.
