Magnocellular Preoptic Area Neurons

Introduction

The Magnocellular Preoptic Area (MCPO) is a critical basal forebrain region that plays essential roles in sleep-wake regulation, cortical activation, and autonomic function. Located in the ventral preoptic area, the MCPO contains large cholinergic neurons that project extensively to the cerebral cortex and limbic structures. These neurons are among the earliest affected in Alzheimer's disease, making them crucial targets for understanding neurodegenerative processes and developing therapeutic interventions PMID: 2954786(https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2954786/).
