Pedunculopontine Nucleus (PPN)

The PPN is located in the pontine tegmentum at the level of the trochlear nucleus and comprises:

Pars compacta: Densely packed cholinergic neurons
Pars dissipata: Scattered cholinergic neurons

Cell types:

Cholinergic neurons (60-70%): Large multipolar cells, 25-35 μm soma
GABAergic neurons (20-30%): Smaller cells
Glutamatergic neurons (10%): Excitatory projections

Laterodorsal Tegmental Nucleus (LDT)

Located medial to the PPN, adjacent to the aqueduct:

Smaller cholinergic neurons (15-25 μm)
Primarily cholinergic with some GABAergic cells
