Morphologically Altered Astrocytes are astrocytes classified within the Glia > Astrocyte > Reactive lineage[@pekny2016]. These cells are found throughout the Brain Parenchyma including the Cortex, Hippocampus, and Substantia Nigra. They are characterized by expression of marker genes including GFAP (Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein), Vimentin, Nestin, and S100B.
