Parabrachial Nucleus Gustatory Neurons

Introduction

The Parabrachial Nucleus (PBN), located in the dorsolateral pons at the brachium conjunctivum, serves as a critical hub for processing gustatory, visceral, and autonomic information. First extensively characterized by Norgren and colleagues in the 1970s and 1980s, the PBN receives input from the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and relays processed information to higher brain regions including the thalamus, hypothalamus, and forebrain structures. [@norgren2021] This bidirectional communication system positions the PBN as a key interface between brainstem sensory processing and cortical integration, with significant implications for understanding neurodegenerative disease processes that affect autonomic and gustatory function.
