PCD is distinct from other [cerebellar ataxias](/diseases/spinocerebellar-ataxia-type-6) like [multiple system atrophy (MSA)multiple-system-atrophy) and [corticobasal degeneration](/diseases/corticobasal-degeneration) in that it is immune-mediated rather than primarily [neurodegenerative](/diseases/neurodegeneration-common-mechanisms). However, it shares features with [Alzheimer's disease](/diseases/alzheimers-disease) and [Parkinson's disease](/diseases/parkinsons-disease) in terms of protein aggregation and immune activation mechanisms.
