Preganglionic autonomic neurons are the efferent neurons of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that originate in the central nervous system and project to autonomic ganglia, where they synapse with postganglionic neurons. These neurons are the critical intermediaries between the CNS and peripheral effector organs, controlling involuntary functions including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, pupillary response, and glandular secretion[@janig2008].
