Introduction

The Principal Pars Compacta (also known as the substantia nigra pars compacta or SNc) is one of the two major subdivisions of the substantia nigra, a midbrain structure critical for motor control and reward processing. The pars compacta is distinguished by its high concentration of dopaminergic [neurons](/entities/neurons) that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine, making it central to the pathophysiology of [Parkinson's disease](/diseases/parkinsons-disease-disease) and other movement disorders[@damier1999].
