Introduction

The Substantia Nigra Pars Reticulata (SNr) is one of the two principal output nuclei of the basal ganglia, serving as a critical hub for motor control, eye movement regulation, and reward processing. Like its counterpart the Globus Pallidus Internus (GPi), SNr [neurons](/entities/neurons) provide tonic GABAergic inhibition to downstream targets in the thalamus, brainstem, and superior colliculus. The SNr plays a particularly important role in eye movement control and is severely affected in [Parkinson's disease](/diseases/parkinsons-disease) and other movement disorders. [@chevalier1982]
