Introduction

Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) neurons are catecholaminergic [neurons](/entities/neurons) that express the rate-limiting enzyme in dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine synthesis. TH catalyzes the conversion of L-tyrosine to L-DOPA, the committed step in catecholamine biosynthesis. These neurons include the dopaminergic neurons of the [substantia nigra](/brain-regions/substantia-nigra) and ventral tegmental area, noradrenergic neurons of the [locus coeruleus](/brain-regions/locus-coeruleus), and adrenergic neurons in the medulla.[@daubner2011]
