The Ventral Posterolateral Thalamic Nucleus (VPL) is a major somatosensory relay nucleus in the dorsal thalamus. Located in the ventral tier of the thalamus, it receives the majority of somatosensory input from the spinal cord via the spinothalamic tract and medial lemniscus, processing tactile, proprioceptive, and nociceptive information before projecting to the primary somatosensory [cortex](/brain-regions/cortex). The VPL is organized somatotopically, with the leg representation located more laterally and the face representation more medially.
