Overview

The visual pathway circuit processes visual information from the retina to primary visual cortex and beyond. This circuit is affected in several neurodegenerative diseases, including [Alzheimer's disease](/diseases/alzheimers-disease) where visual processing deficits can occur early in disease progression[@croningolomb1995]. Visual dysfunction is among the earliest and most prominent non-motor features in [Parkinson's disease](/diseases/parkinsons-disease), [Dementia with Lewy bodies](/diseases/lewy-body-dementia), [Posterior Cortical Atrophy](/diseases/posterior-cortical-atrophy), and [Progressive Supranuclear Palsy](/diseases/progressive-supranuclear-palsy)[@hollander2014]. The visual pathway serves as both a window into brain pathology and a source of accessible biomarkers through retinal imaging.

Circuit Architecture

Anatomical Organization

The visual pathway consists of a series of anatomically defined structures that process visual information in a hierarchical manner. Each node of this circuit is potentially vulnerable to neurodegenerative processes, and the pattern of involvement provides diagnostic clues about underlying pathology[@goodale1992].
