Introduction

DJ1 (encoded by the PARK7 gene) is a multifunctional protein that plays critical roles in oxidative stress response, mitochondrial homeostasis, and neuroprotection. Initially discovered as an oncogene (DJ-1), it was later identified as a cause of autosomal recessive early-onset [Parkinson's disease](/diseases/parkinsons-disease)[@kahle2009]. DJ1 mutations account for approximately 1-2% of early-onset PD cases, typically presenting before age 40[@hague2003][@levy2010].
