DUSP9 (Dual Specificity Phosphatase 9), also known as MKP-4 (Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Phosphatase 4), is a dual-specificity phosphatase predominantly expressed in placental and embryonic tissues. While initially characterized for its role in development and metabolic regulation, emerging research suggests potential relevance to neurodegenerative diseases through its modulation of MAPK signaling pathways. The MAPK (Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase) cascade is critically involved in neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity, and the pathogenesis of [Alzheimer's disease](/diseases/alzheimers-disease) (AD) and [Parkinson's disease](/diseases/parkinsons-disease) (PD).
