ELP4 (Elongator Subunit 4) encodes a non-catalytic component of the Elongator complex that plays critical roles in tRNA modification, RNA processing, and neuronal development["@elp4_function"]. Unlike ELP3, which provides the catalytic acetyltransferase activity, ELP4 functions as a targeting and regulatory subunit that determines the cell-type specificity of Elongator function and facilitates interactions with tRNA molecules and other RNA species.

The Elongator complex (ELP1-ELP6) is essential for the modification of wobble position uridine (U34) in tRNA, a modification crucial for accurate and efficient translation. ELP4 specifically recognizes and binds to certain tRNA species, facilitating their delivery to the catalytic subunit ELP3 for modification["@elp4_neuronal"]. Beyond tRNA modification, ELP4 contributes to alternative splicing regulation and has been implicated in various neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions.
