University of Belgrade

The University of Belgrade (Univerzitet u Beogradu), founded in 1808, stands as the oldest and largest university in Serbia and one of the oldest higher education institutions in the Balkans. Located in the capital city of Belgrade on the banks of the Sava and Danube rivers, the university has evolved from its origins as the "Great School" (Velika Skola) into a comprehensive research university with over 100,000 students across 31 faculties. The university's contributions to neuroscience and neurodegenerative disease research have grown substantially in recent decades, particularly through the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" (IBISS), which serves as the premier neuroscience research institute in Serbia[@unibelgrade][@ibiss].
