The Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) is a leading European research institute headquartered in Leuven, Belgium, founded in 1996. The VIB team led by De Strooper elucidated the role of presenilin as the catalytic component of the gamma-secretase complex. This work revealed the mechanism by which amyloid precursor protein (APP) is cleaved to produce amyloid-beta peptides, the key pathogenic species in Alzheimer's disease.
