Introduction

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a ubiquitous lipid-based neuromodulatory system comprising cannabinoid receptors (CB1R and CB2R), endogenous lipid ligands (endocannabinoids), and the enzymatic machinery for their synthesis and degradation. The ECS plays fundamental roles in synaptic transmission, [neuroinflammation](/mechanisms/neuroinflammation), [oxidative stress](/mechanisms/oxidative-stress) regulation, and neuronal survival across the central nervous system.
