Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors that plays critical roles in the development, maintenance, and survival of neurons throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. Unlike its better-characterized relatives nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), NT-3 exhibits a broader tropism for neuronal populations and signals through a distinct repertoire of receptors that mediate both developmental and adult-stage functions. The NT-3 signaling pathway has emerged as a significant focus of research in neurodegeneration due to its pleiotropic effects on neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity, and the regulation of glial cell function. [@barbacid1995][@huang2001] The degeneration of specific neuronal populations in Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and multiple sclerosis (MS) has been associated with dysregulated NT-3 signaling, making this pathway a potential therapeutic target for intervention in these devastating conditions.
