[Beta-synuclein](/proteins/beta-synuclein) (SNCB) is a member of the [synuclein family](/proteins/synuclein-family) of proteins that includes [alpha-synuclein](/proteins/alpha-synuclein) and [gamma-synuclein](/proteins/gamma-synuclein) [1][2]. Originally identified as a potential inhibitor of alpha-synuclein aggregation, beta-synuclein has emerged as an important player in synaptic function and neurodegeneration. This protein is encoded by the [SNCB gene](/genes/sncbeta) and is expressed predominantly in the nervous system, where it localizes to presynaptic terminals [3][4]. [@burre2012]
