In the brain, caveolin-1 is expressed in multiple cell types with distinct patterns and functions. Neuronal caveolin-1 is enriched at synapses, where it participates in organizing postsynaptic signaling complexes and modulating receptor trafficking. Astrocytic caveolin-1 regulates astrocyte-neuron communication and the function of the blood-brain barrier.
