Overview

[PSMA2](/genes/psma2) encodes alpha type 2, a structural component of the 20S proteasome core. Together with [PSMA5](/proteins/psma5-protein) and other alpha subunits, PSMA2 forms the outer rings that regulate substrate entry into the proteolytic chamber.[@collins2017][@hipp2019] In [neurons](/entities/neurons), this gatekeeping function is critical for managing high protein-turnover demand and limiting accumulation of aggregation-prone proteins linked to [Alzheimer's Disease](/diseases/alzheimers-disease), [Parkinson's Disease](/diseases/parkinsons-disease), and related disorders.[@hipp2019][@keller2000]
