SMAD1 (SMAD family member 1) is a critical signaling protein in the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily pathway. It functions as a transcription factor that mediates cellular responses to TGF-β and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, playing essential roles in development, tissue homeostasis, and disease processes including neurodegeneration.

Overview

SMAD1 Protein is a 493 amino acid protein encoded by the SMAD1 gene (UniProt: Q15797). It is a receptor-regulated SMAD (R-SMAD) that propagates TGF-β/BMP signals from the cell surface to the nucleus. SMAD1 primarily transduces BMP signals, which are crucial for neuronal development, synaptic plasticity, and glial cell function. Dysregulation of SMAD1 signaling has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. [@kretzschmar1997]
