Overview

Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 4 (STAT4) is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors, comprising seven mammalian isoforms (STAT1-STAT7) that regulate gene expression in response to extracellular signaling molecules. STAT4 is a 84 kilodalton protein encoded by the STAT4 gene located on chromosome 2q32.3. Initially characterized as a critical regulator of T helper 1 (Th1) differentiation in immune cells, STAT4 has emerged as a significant player in neuroinflammatory processes relevant to neurodegenerative diseases. The protein functions as both a signal transducer and a transcriptional activator, bridging cytoplasmic signaling cascades to nuclear gene expression programs.
