Overview

Amantadine (brand names: Symmetrel, Gocovri, Osmolex ER) is a multifaceted pharmacological agent with a unique history and diverse clinical applications in [neurodegenerative diseases. Originally developed as an antiviral agent for influenza A in the 1960s, amantadine's antiparkinsonian properties were serendipitously discovered in 1968 when a patient with [parkinsons](/diseases/parkinsons-disease) experienced marked improvement in her parkinsonian symptoms while taking the drug for influenza prophylaxis ([Schwab et al., 1969](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/5769028/)). Since then, amantadine has become a cornerstone of [parkinsons](/diseases/parkinsons-disease) management, particularly as the only pharmacological agent with demonstrated efficacy in treating levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID).
