The AD mechanism of PV interneuron targeting to restore theta-gamma coupling may transfer to neurodegeneration via TREM2-microglial modulation of GABAergic inhibition. In AD, amyloid-induced PV dysfunction disrupts gamma oscillations; in neurodegeneration, heterogenous proteinopathies (tau, α-synuclein, TDP-43) similarly impair PV interneuron survival and gamma generation.
