The EWSR1 gene (Ewing Sarcoma Breakpoint Region 1) encodes a multifunctional RNA-binding protein that belongs to the FET (FUS, EWSR1, TAF15) family of proteins. Originally identified in Ewing sarcoma where chromosomal translocations create oncogenic fusion proteins, EWSR1 has important physiological functions in RNA metabolism, transcription regulation, and cellular stress responses. Emerging evidence suggests roles for EWSR1 in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly through its involvement in RNA processing and stress granule dynamics. [@ewsr2023]
Gene Overview
Protein Product EWSR1 is an RNA-binding protein with multiple functional domains. The protein contains an N-terminal transcription activation domain rich in glutamine, serine, and tyrosine residues, followed by an RNA-binding domain consisting of multiple RNA recognition motifs (RRMs). The C-terminal region contains a zinc finger domain. [@structure2022]
