Ataxin-3 (ATXN3)

Overview

Ataxin-3 (ATXN3) is a deubiquitinating enzyme encoded by the ATXN3 gene. It belongs to the Josephin family of cysteine proteases and has a molecular weight of approximately 42 kDa in its normal form[@costa2023]. Ataxin-3 contains an expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in patients with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3 (SCA3/MJD), making it one of the classic polyQ repeat diseases[@kawaguchi2022]. The protein functions as a deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) that removes ubiquitin chains from target proteins, regulating protein turnover, aggregate clearance, and cellular stress response[@jiang2023].
