KLK1 (Kallikrein-Related Peptidase 1) encodes a serine protease that belongs to the human kallikrein gene family, the largest cluster of protease genes in the human genome. The KLK1 protein, also known as tissue kallikrein, is a 262-amino acid glycoprotein that catalyzes the hydrolysis of kininogen to produce bradykinin, a potent vasoactive peptide involved in inflammation, blood pressure regulation, and tissue remodeling. While traditionally studied in the context of cardiovascular function and inflammation, emerging evidence suggests KLK1 plays important roles in the central nervous system, where it influences neuroinflammation, neuronal survival, and neurodegenerative disease pathogenesis.
