The substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) contains dopamine-producing [neurons](/entities/neurons) that are essential for motor control, reward processing, and cognitive function. These neurons project primarily to the dorsal striatum (caudate nucleus and putamen) forming the nigrostriatal pathway, which is the main pathway affected in Parkinson's disease (PD). The progressive loss of SNc dopamine neurons is the hallmark pathological feature of PD, leading to the characteristic motor symptoms including resting tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity.
