The interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) is a midbrain structure located in the interpeduncular fossa between the cerebral peduncles. It serves as the primary target of habenular efferents via the fasciculus retroflexus, forming a critical node in the dorsal diencephalic conduction system that connects the forebrain to brainstem structures. The IPN receives dense GABAergic input from the [medial habenula](/brain-regions/habenula) and projects to various downstream targets including the [ventral tegmental area](/brain-regions/ventral-tegmental-area), [raphe nuclei](/brain-regions/raphe-nuclei), and [locus coeruleus](/brain-regions/locus-coeruleus).
