Locus coeruleus (LC) noradrenergic projection neurons are the primary source of norepinephrine in the mammalian brain. These neurons project widely to the cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, and spinal cord, modulating arousal, attention, stress responses, and sleep-wake cycles. They are among the first neurons affected in Alzheimer's disease and show prominent degeneration in Parkinson's disease. [@sara2009]
