ATP P2X7 Receptor Neurons

Overview

ATP P2X7 Receptor Neurons represent neurons and glial cells expressing the P2X7 purinergic receptor, a unique ATP-gated ion channel that has emerged as a central player in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. The P2X7 receptor is distinguished from other P2X family members by its distinctive signaling properties, including the formation of large membrane pores that allow passage of molecules up to 900 Da, activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, and engagement of complex downstream signaling cascades that drive pro-inflammatory cytokine release and cell death. While originally characterized in immune cells, P2X7 receptors are now known to be expressed in neurons, astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes throughout the central nervous system, where they participate in both physiological signaling and pathological processes. The P2X7 receptor has attracted intense interest as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological conditions, with several P2X7 antagonists advancing through clinical development.
