Introduction

Translotitudinal (TL) cells, also known as long-range inhibitory interneurons or transcolumnar interneurons, represent a specialized class of GABAergic [neurons](/entities/neurons) that extend their axonal projections across multiple cortical columns and often across extensive regions of the [cortex](/brain-regions/cortex) [1](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24348227/). These cells play crucial roles in coordinating large-scale cortical activity, enabling the integration of information across spatially distributed neural populations, and maintaining coherent cortical processing necessary for complex cognitive functions. The study of translotitudinal cells has become increasingly important in understanding neurodegenerative diseases, as disruptions in long-range inhibitory circuits have been implicated in [Alzheimer's disease](/diseases/alzheimers-disease), schizophrenia, and various disorders of cortical connectivity [2](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25389228/).
