Overview

Galectin-3 (encoded by the LGALS3 gene) is a member of the galectin family of beta-galactoside-binding lectins that plays a multifaceted role in neurodegenerative disease pathogenesis. Unlike other galectins, Galectin-3 contains a unique N-terminal proline-rich domain that enables its involvement in diverse cellular processes including cell adhesion, apoptosis, immune response, and phagocytosis [1](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32877654/). In the central nervous system, Galectin-3 is primarily expressed in microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, where it serves as a key marker of disease-associated microglia (DAM) or neurodegenerative microglia (NG2) [2](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36754923/).
