Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) represents a spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes. The major clinical variants include behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), and nonfluent/agrammatic variant PPA (nfvPPA). Treatment focuses on symptom management as no disease-modifying therapies are currently approved. [@rascovsky2024]
Symptomatic Treatment Approaches
Behavioral and Neuropsychiatric Symptoms
Cognitive Symptoms
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors ([donepezil](/entities/donepezil), rivastigmine): Generally not effective; may worsen behavioral symptoms
Memantine: Mixed results; not routinely recommended
Speech-language pathologist: Communication support
Occupational therapist: Safety and functional independence
Social worker: Caregiver support, resources
Palliative care: Quality of life optimization
Caregiver Support
Education about disease progression
Behavior management strategies
Respite care options
Support groups (AFTD)
Advance care planning
