CHOP (C/EBP Homologous Protein), also known as DDIT3 (DNA Damage Inducible Transcript 3), is a key pro-apoptotic transcription factor that mediates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced cell death. CHOP plays a central role in neurodegeneration by integrating ER stress, oxidative stress, and apoptotic signaling pathways. It is a critical executor of the [unfolded protein response](/entities/unfolded-protein-response) (UPR) when adaptive mechanisms fail, leading to cellular demise in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative conditions. Overview
CHOP PROTEIN is a transcription factor of the C/EBP family that promotes [apoptosis](/entities/apoptosis) under conditions of severe ER stress. CHOP is induced by various cellular stresses including protein misfolding, calcium dysregulation, oxidative stress, and metabolic disturbances. Its upregulation is a hallmark of failed protein homeostasis in neurodegenerative diseases. [@stress2015]
The study of Chop Protein has evolved significantly over the past decades. Research in this area has revealed important insights into the underlying mechanisms of neurodegeneration and continues to drive therapeutic development.
Historical context and key discoveries in this field have shaped our current understanding and will continue to guide future research directions.
