Overview
MMP12 (Matrix Metallopeptidase 12), also known as macrophage elastase or metalloelastase, is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase primarily expressed in macrophages and microglia. As one of the few enzymes capable of degrading native elastin, MMP12 plays critical roles in extracellular matrix remodeling, inflammation, and host defense. In the central nervous system, MMP12 is highly expressed in activated microglia and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and multiple sclerosis.
