Overview

CLCN9 encodes a voltage-gated chloride channel of the CLCN family, located on chromosome 12q24.31. The protein, also known as ClC-9 or CLC-9, is a member of the voltage-gated chloride channel family that functions primarily as a homodimer, with each subunit contributing its own pore to the channel complex. [@steinberg2010] Unlike some other CLC channels that operate primarily as plasma membrane channels, CLCN9 is thought to function predominantly in intracellular compartments, particularly in endosomal and lysosomal membranes where it contributes to acidification, chloride homeostasis, and organellar function. [@jentsch2002]
