NTS (Neurotensin) encodes a 13-amino acid neuropeptide that acts as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator in the central nervous system. Originally isolated from bovine hypothalamus in 1973, neurotensin is widely distributed in the brain and peripheral tissues, where it modulates dopamine transmission, pain perception, thermoregulation, and appetite.
