This region serves as the command post of the neuron, where action potentials are initiated and the neuronal identity of the axon is established and maintained. The AIS is characterized by a dense accumulation of voltage-gated ion channels, scaffolding proteins, and cytoskeletal elements that together create a unique electrochemical environment critical for neuronal signaling [@rasband2010][@buffington2011][@leterrier2016].
