HIF Signaling in Neurodegeneration

Introduction

The Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF) signaling pathway is the master transcriptional regulator of cellular adaptation to low oxygen conditions. HIF controls the expression of over 300 target genes governing angiogenesis, erythropoiesis, glucose metabolism, cell survival, and mitophagy[@semenza2012]. In the brain — which consumes ~20% of total body oxygen — HIF signaling plays a particularly critical role.
